JOB INFORMATION:

The Civil Litigation Division of the San Diego City Attorney’s Office is seeking applications for a Deputy City Attorney position in the Workers’ Compensation Unit. This position reports directly to the Chief Deputy City Attorney.

The Workers’ Compensation Unit works closely with the Risk Management Department to provide legal advice on a wide range of issues, from interpretation of legislative changes to operational decisions regarding benefits and medical care.  In addition to its advisory role, the unit handles all aspects of litigation at the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board, including trials, hearings, liens, death benefits, motions, and appeals.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Deputies in the Workers’ Compensation Unit routinely:

  • Advise workers’ compensation claims adjusters in the Risk Management Department.
  • Handle all aspects of litigation at the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board.
  • Write pleadings, trial briefs, appeals, and advisory communications.
  • Analyze and evaluate medical reports.
  • Depose doctors on complex medical issues.
  • Handle appeals to the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board and Fourth District Court of Appeal.
  • Work with employment law advisory attorneys on ADA/accommodation issues.
  • Perform other work as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Applicants are required to:

Be licensed to practice law and an active member in good standing in all courts in the State of California.

Ideal Candidates:

The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of workers’ compensation experience, and strong research, writing, and advocacy skills. Additionally, the ideal candidate should have excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex legal issues in simple terms.

Attorneys in this position must be able to travel to locations outside the office for court hearings, depositions, or meetings; therefore, possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license and personal vehicle or other means to travel are required.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Compensation and Benefits:

The successful candidate will be eligible for participation in the City’s Flexible Benefits Plan that offers several optional benefit plans or a taxable cash option; $50,000 in City-paid life insurance; paid annual leave accruing at 22 days per year for the 1st through the 15th year of service. Pre-Employment Requirements:   Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes that are applicable to this job, which may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Reference checks.
  • Proof of citizenship or legal right to work in the United States.
  • Fingerprint checks: fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report.
  • Medical evaluation: a City medical examination including drug/alcohol screening and documentation of medical history may be conducted following a conditional offer of employment or promotion.
  • Certain positions may require additional screening processes that may include a polygraph examination and/or background investigation.
