
The Armenian Bar Association congratulates our Board Member Sarah Leah Whitson on her appointment to the Executive Board of the International Observatory for Democracy in Armenia (IODA) at a crucial point In Armenia’s trajectory towards the national elections scheduled for June 7, 2026.
The IODA is an independent, non-partisan initiative that monitors democratic developments in Armenia and provides analysis on governance, elections, civil society, and the protection of fundamental freedoms. The organization brings together international experts and observers committed to strengthening democratic institutions, transparency, and accountability in Armenia.
Ms. Whitson, a graduate of the Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School, U.C. Berkeley and Harvard Law School, is a prominent human rights lawyer and advocate with decades of experience advancing accountability, rule of law, and democratic governance globally. She has held senior leadership roles at major international human rights organizations and continues to be an influential voice on issues of international law, civil liberties, and human rights in the Middle East and beyond.
Ms. Whitson is currently in Armenia on a working visit with her colleagues, where IODA recently issued a statement addressing developments affecting democratic governance in the country. The statement underscored the importance of protecting democratic institutions, maintaining an open civic space, and ensuring that governance reforms and political processes remain transparent, accountable, and consistent with the rule of law. IODA emphasized that sustained commitment to democratic principles will be essential to Armenia’s long-term stability, resilience, and public trust in its institutions.
